Guardians of the Grandchildren - By Robert Landau

Mission Statement:

Our mission is to empower grandparents to demand a sustainable, prosperous, and

equitable future for their grandchildren. We advocate for policies, initiatives, and community efforts that address environmental stewardship, social justice, education reform, and economic resilience, ensuring a brighter tomorrow for future generations.

Vision Statement:

We envision a world where every grandchild inherits a healthy planet, inclusive and supportive communities, and abundant and accessible opportunities. Through grandparents’ dedication and collective action, we aim to leave a legacy of positive change, fostering a future where our grandchildren can thrive and realize their fullest potential.

Purpose:

After watching the first presidential debate and listening to these two senior citizens, I was struck by how little they spoke about why it's vital to protect and serve our most vulnerable citizens. The UN Rights of the Child, the UN Sustainable Development Goals, the US Constitution, and the US Bill of Rights all speak to the rights of everyone regardless of the basis of race, color, religion (creed), gender, gender expression, age, national origin (ancestry), disability, marital status, sexual orientation, or military status.

All kind, loving, dedicated, and aware grandparents need to rally and advocate for a secure future for their grandchildren. We are angry, sad, and disappointed that candidates tend to focus on the here and now—what’s best for the current voters—and not on their responsibility to be "good ancestors" protecting our society, health, environment, and economy for our grandchildren.

We aim to unite grandparents like us and send one million letters to our presidential candidates, senators, congresspeople, mayors, city council members – anyone making shortsighted decisions for long-term pain. It's time for a grassroots, peaceful, but purposeful revolution to let our politicians know that we are mad as hell and will not take it anymore. Just because we are seniors ourselves does not mean that we don't care.

As good ancestors and grandparents, we need our elected officials, in fact, all adults, to stop fighting, stop yelling, stop lying, stop procrastinating, and start caring, supporting, serving, and protecting our grandchildren so that they might enjoy the same fresh air, clean water, opportunities, and peaceful coexistence that we were promised in our fifth-grade US history classes.

I have included a template letter for you to write to as many elected officials as possible.

Come on, fellow grandparents (parents, tell your parents). Please unite as one strong force and give your grandchildren the greatest gift of all—their future.

Use this template to write your elected official(s)

Dear Elected Official,

As a grandparent and a concerned citizen, I am writing to you with a heartfelt plea to prioritize the well-being of our youngest and most vulnerable citizens – our grandchildren. Recent political discourse has left many of us feeling disheartened and disillusioned. We need our leaders to focus not just on immediate political gains but on ensuring a sustainable, just, and prosperous future for the next generations.

The UN Rights of the Child, the UN Sustainable Development Goals, the US Constitution, and the US Bill of Rights all affirm the rights and dignity of every individual, regardless of race, color, religion (creed), gender, gender expression, age, national origin (ancestry), disability, marital status, sexual orientation, or military status. It is our collective responsibility to uphold these principles and safeguard the future of our children and grandchildren. Yet, policy decisions often reflect short-term thinking rather than the long-term stewardship required to address pressing issues such as climate change, social inequality, and economic instability.

I urge you to adopt the mindset of a "good ancestor" and consider the legacy we are leaving behind. This involves:

  1. Protecting Our Environment: Implement policies that combat climate change, preserve natural resources, and ensure clean air and water for future generations.

  2. Ensuring Social Justice: Advocate for and enact legislation that promotes equality, inclusivity, and protection for all children, regardless of their background.

  3. Supporting Education and Health: Invest in education and healthcare systems that give every child the opportunities and support they need to thrive.

  4. Fostering Economic Stability: Develop and support economic policies that create sustainable growth and secure jobs for the future workforce.

We are not just grandparents but advocates for a future where our grandchildren can live healthy, happy, and fulfilling lives. We call upon you to put aside partisan conflicts and work collaboratively towards policies that serve the greater good. The decisions you make today will shape the world our grandchildren inherit tomorrow.

We hope the collective voices of caring grandparents nationwide inspire meaningful action and positive change.

Please do not let short-term political agendas overshadow our planet’s and its people’s long-term needs. Be the leaders who protect and serve, listen and act, and fight for the future of all children.

Thank you for your attention to this critical matter. We are counting on your leadership and vision.

Sincerely,

[Your Name][Your Address][City, State, ZIP Code][Email Address][Phone Number]
